Outstanding Activist!

Like many who care about animals, Cathy Grovenburg evolved slowly into the activist she is today. Her decision to become vegetarian, however, was made in an instant. Ten years ago, she stood by her nephew's side as he sold his 4-H steer for market. Watching tears stream down the boy's face, she allowed herself to reflect upon the life and death of the unfortunate animal they had brought to the auction ring. Then, recognizing how many lives she could save single-handedly by changing her own eating habits, she swore off meat for good.

Years later, after attending one of Farm Sanctuary's Critter Care conferences, Cathy took her personal commitment to animals a step further by becoming vegan. After hearing about the cruelty of the dairy and egg industries, the choice was easy. In fact, Cathy decided not only to go vegan herself, but to share her message of mercy and compassion with others as well. Whenever she gets the chance, Cathy tries to educate friends, family, and members of her community about factory farming and the benefits of going vegetarian or vegan.

A valuable member of our Friends of Hilda Club and a tireless volunteer, Cathy has proven invaluable to Farm Sanctuary's efforts on behalf of farm animals. She regularly attends our California Shelter events, often pitching in to help register guests, serve meals, staff barns, coordinate donations, and clean up our People Barn, long after most of our visitors have gone home. Cathy has also been instrumental in Farm Sanctuary's outreach initiatives and legislative endeavors. She tables regularly at important conferences and events, and played an active role in the effort to ban veal and gestation crates in the state of California, by writing hundreds of letters, making hundreds of phone calls, and passing out hundreds of fliers.

Thank you, Cathy, for all that you do! You are a true blessing to the animals and an inspiration to us all.

Together, we ARE making a difference. If you would like to find out more about volunteering your time to educate others about factory farming and vegetarianism, please contact us at activist@farmsanctuary.org, or call 607-583-2225 ext. 229. Click here to find out what YOU can do to help!
