Dismantling the Factory Farm: One State, One Step at a Time
While the weather shifts from winter to spring, legislators around the country are running hot or cold on measures impacting the lives of farm animals. These bills, if enacted into law, would have a profound impact on industrial animal agriculture. It's time to dismantle the factory farm, one step and one state at a time. Throughout the country, legislation is being introduced for farm animal protection, or, in some cases, to codify the cruel status quo. It's up to you — the constituents — to see that our laws reflect our values of compassion, kindness and respect.
Here are some bills that require your action:
- California’s recent ban on battery cages, gestation crates and veal crates has prompted similar bills in Illinois and Massachusetts. It is time to give these animals at least a little bit of room to stretch their limbs!
- Battery cages may be heading to the scrap heap in Connecticut.
- California and Illinois dairy farmers may have to stop cutting off their cows’ tails if bills to pass tail docking pass in these states.
- A proactive measure to ban foie gras production is pending in Maine.
- In Oklahoma and Georgia, legislation aims to shut down the ability of local governments and citizens to pass laws protecting farm animals.
- Legislators in Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, and Washington are all looking to label products derived from cloned animals and give consumers the power to say "no"!
- Legislation to protect downed animals from neglect and abuse is once again fighting for passage in New York.
Find other farm animal protection legislation pending in your state, then contact your legislators using our legislator lookup tool (enter you zip code, click "Go", then click on the tab for your state officials, not your federal officials).
