Help Stop Construction of Oswego Cattle Factory
Last year, Bion Environmental Technologies, Inc. introduced a proposal to the Oswego County legislature to allow for the construction and operation of multiple facilities in the area that would house a total of 72,000 beef cattle. Massive operations like this are notorious for the devastating impacts they have on animals, our environment and public health, and this one would be the largest east of the Mississippi River, causing great concern to many local residents.
As part of its proposal, Bion plans to try out a new technique of harvesting methane from cattle manure and using it to make ethanol energy. As such, the company claims that its operation will have minimal environmental impact. However, this only scratches the surface when it comes to the air and water pollution problems that factory farms can create, putting both people and ecosystems in surrounding areas at risk. And in terms of large-scale animal suffering, these mammoth, crowded facilities create terrible conditions for the cattle too.
