Internship Information

The hard work and dedication of Farm Sanctuary interns has been a vital part of our work since Farm Sanctuary began in 1986. Your commitment helps us rescue, care for and advocate for suffering victims of food animal production every day.

VOLUNTEER ASSIGNMENTS
Internships are available in the following departments:
Administration, Outreach and Advocacy, Development, Education, Communication, and Shelter. Specific responsibilities and qualifications vary by department. For more information, please check the description for the position that you are applying for.

HOUSING
Housing is offered at no charge for all Farm Sanctuary interns at our Orland, Acton and Watkins Glen facilities and includes shared bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen facilities. Interns are required to share in household cleaning chores and keep community areas clean for the comfort of everyone living together. We regret that we cannot accommodate companion animals.

MEALS
Interns are responsible for buying and preparing their own food. For internships where housing is provided, weekly trips to the grocery store are provided for interns without vehicles.

SCHEDULES
Interns volunteer a full-time, 40-hour a week schedule. Scheduling varies by department.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Optional educational presentations are provided for all interns at our NY and CA Shelters. These may include, but are not limited to: History of Farm Sanctuary, Cruelty Investigations, Basic Farm Animal Care, Vegan Nutrition, Effective Advocacy, and Vegan Cooking. All interns will have the opportunity to give their preferences for topics, and we will try to accommodate as many of these choices as possible.

VEGAN LIVING
Out of respect for the animals and the work that Farm Sanctuary does, all staff and interns are required to be vegan while on sanctuary premises. Vegan living includes diet (no meat, dairy products, eggs, honey, or other animal byproducts), personal care items (cruelty-free and no animal byproducts), and clothing (no leather, silk or wool).

AVAILABILITY
Most Farm Sanctuary internships are available year round. Positions are filled on an ongoing basis as applications are received. Summer positions fill quickly, so if you're interested in these months, be sure to contact us well in advance. We will begin reviewing summer applications in January and filling positions after that. Due to high demand, we encourage you to consider an internship during a non-summer month.
