MUTTS AND YES! ON PROP 2 REACH VOTERS ON THE FUNNY PAGES
Creator of MUTTS comic strip devotes a week to protecting farm animals from cruelty

SACRAMENTO — This week California’s Proposition 2 will be featured in Patrick McDonnell’s comic strip MUTTS, where the cartoonist is focusing attention on the modest initiative aimed at changing animal confinement practices on factory farms so that veal calves, breeding pigs and egg-laying hens have room to stand up, sit down and extend their limbs.
“Most readers know that animal protection issues are integrated into MUTTS,” said McDonnell. “Prop 2 is just too important to not tackle. Even though the reform will be modest, it puts a stake into the ground that the way we treat farm animals matters. We would never treat dogs or cats this way. It’s wrong to keep farm animals confined in these cruel, inhumane ways.”
MUTTS is syndicated in more than 700 newspapers in 20 countries. It reaches 4 million California households. McDonnell will be at the Jack Gallery in Los Angeles on Saturday for an exhibition of his newest collection of paintings on paper and canvas, in a benefit for the YES! on Prop 2 campaign.
“Patrick has long been a leader in spreading the word about what we can do to stop the worst types of abuses. His artful effort to help pass Prop 2 will reach millions of California voters,” said YES! on Prop 2 campaign manager Jennifer Fearing.
Prop 2 is also supported by The Humane Society of the United States, the California Veterinary Medical Association, the Center for Food Safety, the ASPCA, the Consumer Federation of America, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the United Farm Workers, Farm Sanctuary, the Sierra Club, Cesar Chavez Foundation, California Council of Churches IMPACT, Republican and Democratic elected officials, hundreds of California veterinarians, family farmers, religious leaders, and many others.
