Farm Sanctuary Wins 2009 Veggie Award

WATKINS GLEN, NY – October 30, 2009 — VegNews, America’s premier vegetarian lifestyle magazine, announces Farm Sanctuary as the 2009 Veggie Award Winner for Favorite Animal Sanctuary. With nearly 35,000 readers voting for their favorite veg people, places, and products in 62 categories, this annual survey is the largest of its kind in the world. The awards showcase the best of vegetarian in categories ranging from soymilk, veggie burger, and restaurant to celebrity, website, and even most veg-friendly city.

“Farm Sanctuary is a leader in farm animal rescue and rehabilitation. We are pleased to honor your accomplishments with a 2009 Veggie Award,” says VegNews Publisher Joseph Connelly.

Farm Sanctuary operates two shelters — a 175-acre farm in upstate New York and a 300-acre farm in northern California— that rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for hundreds of cows, pigs, sheep, turkeys and other farm animals who have been rescued from stockyards, factory farms and slaughterhouses. At their world-class shelters, the animals are given all the care and love needed to recover from a lifetime of abuse and neglect, including nourishing food, spacious, clean barns, and acres of green, sunny pastures in which to roam. In addition to caring for hundreds of animals, Farm Sanctuary’s facilities receive thousands of visitors every year and offer unique visitor centers, filled with displays, literature and videos, as well as gift shops, where visitors will find a variety of items, including books, posters, vegan clothing and snacks.

The VegNews Veggie Awards recognize excellence in the vegetarian industry. VegNews’ readers submit their ballots during the month of August, and winners are announced in the holiday edition of the magazine. The annual celebration of the best that veg living has to offer has become the most popular feature in the publication. The issue will be available November 1 on newsstands everywhere and through the magazine’s website, vegnews.com.

Farm Sanctuary is the nation's leading farm animal protection organization.
