Lucky Piglet Arrives Safe at Farm Sanctuary's California Shelter

Ramona was rescued and brought to live at Farm Sanctuary's California Shelter after she fell in an open sewer drain and almost drowned. The man who rescued Ramona found the frantic, exhausted piglet treading water to stay alive. He wasn't sure where she had come from, but suspected she may have escaped from a pig farm in the area and fallen into the drain the night before. Unwilling to let her die, the man carefully pulled Ramona from the cold water and took her home.

Ramona was in bad shape at the time of her rescue. The kind man who brought her home could see that she was terribly weak and partially blind as well. He did his best to keep her comfortable, made sure that she was fed and kept her at his home for several weeks to help her recover. Then, knowing that he could not keep Ramona forever, the man called Farm Sanctuary. When we heard of Ramona's plight, we happily agreed to take her in.

Now, thanks to the compassion of one kind man, Ramona has a life full of joy and promise ahead of her. Soon after her rescue, she traveled to the UC Davis Veterinary Hospital to be spayed and to get a full health check up. With the help of the doctors at UC Davis and the hard work of her caregivers, Ramona's vision returned to normal and she recovered well from her ordeal. She is so happy and at peace here--perhaps because she knows she has come to a place where she will be loved and cherished for the rest of her days. Seeing her digging in the mud and galloping to meet us at the gate to the pig barn, we are happy, too, and grateful for such a precious addition to the farm.
