Affy
For over two years, New Yorkers rallied to save Affy, a domestic goose who was trying to survive on the Hudson River. New York City sanitation workers built him a small housing shed, caring people brought him food every day and dedicated rescuers spent days trying to catch him. But despite everyone's efforts, whenever someone tried to catch Affy, he flew into the river. The rescue effort became more urgent after Affy was seen with a wound, and temperatures dropped below zero. Despite freezing cold weather and the danger of plunging into the river, a dedicated team of rescuers renewed their efforts, and when the river froze near the bank, two of the rescuers were able to get out on the ice and net him.
Affy was taken to nearby farm, where he was safe and warm, but he could only stay there temporarily. Affy needed a permanent home, and our New York Shelter welcomed him with open arms. Dedicated rescue volunteers loaded him into their car and drove five hours to our upstate New York sanctuary. Affy, who had spent over two years alone, frightened, cold, and hungry, was now living in a safe, warm barn filled with straw, bowls of nourishing food (his favorite foods are romaine lettuce and corn bread!) and loving friends. When Affy was introduced to the other sanctuary geese, it was clear from all the honking and splashing, that he knew he would be safe, happy and loved for the rest of his life.
P.S. Affy and ALL of us at Farm Sanctuary send a heartfelt THANK YOU to the many compassionate people who cared for him in the city, helped with the rescue, and provided him a new beginning at Farm Sanctuary. Thank you Nancy Beaulieu, Rosalind Belford, Toni Dalton, Lesley Dogel (and her entire family, Nick, Nora, John and Rowena), Carol Moon, Tonya Pen, Brenda Seldin, Ashley Smith, and NYC Sanitation Workers. Honks to you!
