2024 at Farm Sanctuary: A Year-in-Review

Thanks to the generosity and dedication of our supporters, we made meaningful progress for farmed animals and advanced systemic food system change in 2024.

Here are a few key highlights from the past year! In 2024, Farm Sanctuary:

  • Joined five effective coalitions, submitted 26 letters of support for important policies, and, as part of the Healthy Future Students and Earth Coalition, persuaded the USDA to prioritize plant-based foods in the updated child nutrition meal patterns—increasing student access to fruits, vegetables, and legumes.
  • Supported a coalition effort to pass the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act, spearheaded by Assemblymember Steve Bennett—making California the first state to ban the sale of farmed octopus and the second state to ban octopus farming. And with George Washington University, hosted a World Aquatic Animal Day event.
  • After extensive research and collaboration, we released the groundbreaking Food System Shift Roadmap, a blueprint for a just and sustainable plant-based food system. We are now advocating for the adoption of these policy recommendations.
  • Opened a vegan cafe, garden, and learning center at our NY sanctuary, demonstrating local, sustainable plant-based food production. Helped the Green Rural Redevelopment Organization (GRRO) expand by 1020% through a successful Farm Sanctuary pilot, shifting 1.4 million meals to benefit animals, people, and the planet. Continued exploring land trusts and other ways to incentivize plant-based agriculture.

  • Placed op-eds and obtained media coverage in major outlets reaching hundreds of millions about bird flu and other salient issues; garnered over 71 million social media views; and reached 340k NPR listeners in Washington, D.C. with the help of Marilyn and Donald Allan.
  • Published a peer-reviewed study entitled Pecking Up Optimism, which elevates understanding of chickens’ emotional lives, and earned a cover story by The Christian Science Monitor on our compassionate research guiding sanctuary animal welfare.
  • Reached over 50,000 students through humane education programs and curriculum and launched the Bold Choice Fund initiative, empowering the next generation to make kind and sustainable choices. Hosted Girl Scouts at the farm and created educational programs that can be used to earn Girl Scout badges.

  • Provided daily care and enrichment for hundreds of rescued animals at our NY and CA sanctuaries, including 18 spaces transformed to benefit the enrichment and autonomy of our chicken and turkey residents; covered nearly 31,000 miles to rescue and place animals; and responded to over 1,000 inquiries representing 6,800 animals in need.
  • Among the 38 individual animals welcomed to or born at Farm Sanctuary in 2024, spent six weeks strategizing and ensuring the safe rescue of Olive cow after her harrowing escape from a NY dairy farm.
  • Completed the second year of baling our own hay at sanctuary and supplemented the yearly hay feed budget by almost $16,000.
  • Tabled at Dead & Co shows at the Sphere in Las Vegas, reaching thousands with a message of peace and continuing our longtime relationship with the Grateful Dead.
