A Terrified Dairy Survivor Learns She’s Safe at Sanctuary

In November 2024, Olive arrived at our New York sanctuary after escaping a dairy farm, the heartbreaking loss of her calf, and a weeks-long rescue. She was terrified of humans, but being surrounded by our caregivers’ patience, empathy, and love has changed everything.

In the safety of sanctuary, Olive is learning that she will never have to be afraid again. In fact, she is dancing for joy.

Sarah Rappleye is our Animal Environment Manager, but she’s known as “The Cow Whisperer” for her inspiring ability to connect with newly rescued cows and help them feel at home at Farm Sanctuary.

Sarah tells us Olive has not only stopped hiding in the back of the barn but even does a cute little dance when we come in to give her apples and grain in the morning. Olive now accepts food directly from Sarah’s hand or a bowl she’s holding and no longer pulls away when her face is gently petted.

“Olive trusts a bit more each day and has shown that she is sweet and playful at times,” says Sarah.

Many of the animals we rescue come from situations of abuse or neglect. The trauma of their past weighs heavily on them, but sanctuary is uplifting. Seeing them realize they no longer have to live in fear is a joy. And once they do, their incredible personalities shine through.

At Farm Sanctuary, Olive is safe. She is loved. She is finally home.
