Watkins Glen, NY – Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal protection organization is adding 96 contiguous acres of forest and grassland to its flagship Watkins Glen, NY, shelter. The property acquisition ensures continued unparalleled care while maximizing resources to further meet individual species-specific needs. Rescued animals will have broader access to forestland (perfectly suited for pigs) and more easily accessible pastures (ideal for special-needs residents). This added acreage compliments expanded bed and breakfast opportunities as annual visitation to the Finger Lakes-area property has grown to nearly 10,000 visitors with the opening of 3 new tiny houses in 2017, popular tours, and regularly sold-out onsite seasonal celebrations.
As an even greater number of visitors are this year expected to visit Farm Sanctuary’s Watkins Glen shelter, the organization has made a strategic decision to close operations at its Northern California shelter in Orland, CA, relocating the majority of animals to Watkins Glen. This move will provide greater access to these beloved farm animal ambassadors. Farm Sanctuary will meanwhile continue California-specific rescue and shelter work in Acton, CA, and the organization has expanded its weekend public tour schedule to include Fridays. Additionally, this spring, Farm Sanctuary’s Humane Education program will include a presenter in Northern California.
With these changes in place, the organization seeks to further cement its position as the nation’s largest and most effective farm animal rescue and protection organization.
