Indigo

Name

Indigo

Rescue Date

February 11, 2020

Location

Farm Sanctuary, California

Indigo was born in a slaughterhouse, but this terrifying moment led her and her mother, Liberty, to a lifetime of sanctuary.

Thankfully, the facility’s owner did not kill cows who were pregnant or had just given birth and made the kind decision to surrender both Indigo and Liberty into our care. When we arrived to bring them home, actor-activist Joaquin Phoenix gently carried Indigo to our trailer—and helped raise awareness for all cows.

Today, Indigo has grown into a big, affectionate, playful, and carefree cow our caregivers lovingly call the “darling of the herd.” Like the playful dogs many see as family, Indigo runs zoomies through the grass when she goes out to enjoy her pasture. But just like in her days as a calf, Indigo likes to stay close to Liberty, and her devoted mama always keeps a watchful eye out for her. At Farm Sanctuary, these two have the family and freedom all farm animals deserve.
