Farm Sanctuary, Los Angeles

Jessica hen fell from a transport truck onto California’s busy 605 Freeway, most likely after a cruel start in life on a factory farm. Unlike the fate of most farmed animals who fall on the way to slaughter, this accident is what saved Jessica’s life.

California Highway Patrol stopped traffic while Animal Control helped to get Jessica and the other survivors into a car. In all, nine Cornish cross chickens found their safe place to land at Farm Sanctuary. Likely for the first time, Jessica had room to explore and the freedom to be herself. Today, she’s blossomed into a happy hen and a foodie. The Cornish chickens get special diets, so they’re fed at specific times and places throughout their yard. They all know where to go, and waddling up to mealtime is Jessica’s favorite fun. This tight-knit flock of friends spends their days together, often sunbathing in a cuddle puddle or snuggling at bedtime.
