- Listening needs to go both ways. Although it can be tempting to quickly recite facts about the impact our food system has on the world around us, it is important to hear others’ perspectives. By listening to their side of the story you can have a meaningful conversation.
- Speak from your experience. Have you met a farm animal at a sanctuary? Or did you watch a video online that impacted you? Talk about it! Family is usually eager to hear about your life and the things that are important to you.
- Make connections. A lot of animal lovers have not made connections with farm animals or even met them before. Does your family member live with a companion animal who is precious to them? If they adore their dog, explain that, like dogs, pigs are also individuals who feel a variety of emotions. Maybe pull up a video from Farm Sanctuary to show their unique personalities.
- Communicate with an open heart. If you are interested in reducing your consumption of animal products, there are a few tips to help your family accept that. Remember that food is often closely tied to family traditions and culture, and a discussion around food choices might get emotional. Speak from your heart and be patient. Know that it is not your responsibility to change what anyone else eats, but you can still eat together and try new recipes together. If you are inclined to change how you eat, celebrate the small steps and focus on the changes you can make. Not everyone has access to healthy and affordable food choices and it can be hard to change the way you eat when your parents buy the groceries. Talking with family and friends and building a dialogue so we can work together toward a better food system is a powerful step to take.
