Mr. Clean with a Conscience

The following excerpt is from the 2019 Fall/Winter issue of Sanctuary, Farm Sanctuary’s annual publication.

David Bronner is not your typical CEO. The “Cosmic Engagement Officer” of Dr. Bronner’s all-natural, gender-neutral soaps—you may recognize them from their charmingly verbose packaging—is a fifth-generation soapmaker. Like his eccentric granddad, company founder, Emanuel Bronner, he uses the brand as a, well… soapbox for their shared belief in All-One Love. “We’re all linked. We’re all part of the same environment, linked in the way that life pours into life,” he says. “I’m making a choice about what kind of world is out there, to take care of the plants, the animals, and the workers that sustain us.”

Bronner, vegan since 1996, provides free plant-based lunches to his employees as just one way to “fight and unite.” He embodies constructive capitalism, promoting regenerative organic agriculture, advocating for animal welfare, supporting wage equality and fair labor practices, and working toward drug policy reform. Want to know how he makes doing good look so good?

Dr. Bronner's hair rinse

Dr. Bronner’s 4-in-1 Organic Sugar Soap and Citrus Organic Hair Rinse “I wash my hair once a week. Lavender and Peppermint are my two favorite scents, and I go back and forth,” he says. After lathering, cleansing, and rinsing, he pours an acidic hair rinse over the hair “to smooth the cuticle and make it really luxurious,” he says. In a pinch, diluted apple cider vinegar or lemon juice works, too. ($10.99 for 12oz, $9.99 for 8oz; drbronner.com)

Eden's Garden peppermint essential oil

Edens Garden Essential Oil Bronner isn’t a cologne type of guy, but “I like to apply natural peppermint, lavender, or tea tree oil just inside the wrists.” ($16.95 for 1oz, edensgarden.com)

Dr. Bronner's shaving soap

Dr. Bronner’s Organic Shaving Soap “The unpronounceable ingredients in a shaving foam are some of the most toxic things you could be putting on your face,” Bronner says. Not so with this gel. “We swapped some of the water out for organic, free trade sugar from Paraguay, which is a natural humectant. It’s a real smooth shave, very moisturizing.” ($9.99 for 7oz, drbronner.com)

Badger SPF 30

Badger Natural Mineral Unscented Sunscreen Cream SPF 30 Many mineral sunscreens protect skin with zinc oxide, and “Badger makes the best ones,” he says. They’re cruelty-free, non-nano, biodegradable, and coral reef-friendly. ($15.99, badgerbalm.com)
