July 17 is World Emoji Day, a time to celebrate those quirky little pictograms that tell the world when we’re happy, sad, frustrated, or excited. Emojis were created in the late ‘90s by a designer named Shigetaka Kurita. Initially, they were included as a feature on mobile phones. Nowadays, emojis are everywhere. We see them on clothing, correspondences, and, yes, also on our mobile devices.

The popularity of emojis has also led to the original 176 symbols created in 1997 expanding to include foods, holidays and experiences, and even different animal species. From cats and dogs to cows and pigs, people can now share their love of animals with everyone they message.
