Julie Turkey Is Loving Her First Winter of Sanctuary

In November, Julie was facing slaughter at just four months old for a holiday that claimed the lives of 46 million turkeys. Now, she’s hopping through the snow without a care in the world, thanks to a change of heart.

At only four months old, Julie would have been killed for Thanksgiving. But our supporters have truly given her something to be thankful for: a second chance to live.

Purchased along with three other young turkeys, friendly and curious Julie was being raised for food. Sadly, the rest of her flock did not survive, leaving her all alone. Soon, this heartbroken and lonely bird was following her guardian around the yard, eager for companionship.

But…who wouldn’t fall in love with Julie? Although she was scheduled to be slaughtered, her guardian was moved and chose to save Julie’s life—and we were grateful to bring this survivor to her safe and permanent home at our New York sanctuary.

Once known as Avery, Julie was lovingly renamed by devoted Farm Sanctuary supporter Linda Lowe in memory of her late sister. That cherished memory lives on in Julie and the life that Linda has helped make possible for her.

When newly rescued residents arrive at Farm Sanctuary, we give them time before they join the other animals for everyone’s health and safety. Julie has since met her flock and is getting to know the other avian residents.

She loves the enrichment activities we offer her, and being adventurous, she likes to perch and jump in the highest spots.

Winter gets cold and snowy in Upstate New York, but Julie doesn’t mind at all. In fact, she couldn’t wait to get outside on her first snowy sanctuary day and immediately started happily chirping her way through the snow.
