Chickens Sold for Food Suffocated in a Plastic Bag. Only Magik Hen Survived.

Animals sold and raised for food are treated like products, often causing immense suffering. Magik hen was among chickens transported in a plastic bag in the trunk of a car. Sadly, she was the only one who would survive the trip.

We don’t know how long Magik suffered, but in a plastic bag crowded with birds, the animals can suffocate, struggling for air. The heartbreaking truth is that this is not an experience unique to Magik and the group she was transported with; in the egg industry, male chicks are often left to suffocate in bags (or ground up alive) because they cannot lay eggs and are, therefore, considered useless. For any animal, this would be a slow and terrifying death.

All of her companions died, but Magik somehow survived the harrowing journey – yet she still faced slaughter. Thankfully, a kind rescuer took her in and changed her fate.

Magik’s guardian would soon discover this brave bird’s inspiring will to be free, as Magik escaped her temporary home and, for a while, was hesitant to be rescued once again.

The rescuer spotted her around the property and in the trees, taking in her surroundings.

When Magik was safely home again, her rescuer turned to us to see if we could offer her a permanent situation to meet her needs and help her be happy and thriving.

We quickly brought her to Farm Sanctuary Los Angeles, where she will be a permanent resident, and we’re thrilled to welcome this inspiring survivor as a member of our sanctuary family.

“The trauma Magik experienced in witnessing her friends die, and nearly dying herself, is unimaginable,” says Ashley Pankratz, Farm Sanctuary’s Senior Manager of Rescue & Placement. “We’re deeply grateful for the compassion of Magik’s rescuer, who recognized her will to live and refused to look away.”

At Farm Sanctuary, we see and value farm animals not for what they can produce but for who they are as individuals – sentient beings who want to live on their terms, like Magik.

With us, Magik will live her life in the peace and freedom of sanctuary, where she can stretch her wings, feel the sunshine and wind on her feathers, and spend time with her flock.

Welcome home, Magik! You are free.
