NEW YORK CITY – On June 10, 2017, Farm Sanctuary, America’s leading farm animal protection organization, will kick-off a new nationwide movement to outrun cruelty with compassion with the New York City Plant Powered Run at Pier 84 at Hudson River Park. Held in partnership with Green Festival, America’s largest and longest-running sustainability and green-living event, the New York City Plant Powered Run will raise funds and awareness for Farm Sanctuary, which works to protect farm animals from cruelty and change the way society views and treats these emotionally complex animals through rescue, education, and advocacy.
Most people adopt a plant-based lifestyle for one of three reasons: for the animals, for personal health, or for the environment. Similarly, there are three ways participants in the Plant Powered Run can help outrun cruelty with compassion: a 10K Timed Run, a Fun Run, and a non-competitive Walk component.
The Opening Ceremony will feature a talk from Farm Sanctuary’s celebrated President and Co-founder Gene Baur, whom TIME magazine calls “the conscience of the food movement” and Oprah Winfrey recently selected to join her SuperSoul 100 “dream team” of “100 awakened leaders who are using their voices and talent to elevate humanity.”
A pioneer in undercover investigations and instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws to ban inhumane factory farming practices, Baur is author of two national bestselling books: Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day. Says Baur, “Powering our bodies with plants is a great way to stay healthy and thrive, and it’s also better for animals and the environment. If we can live well without causing unnecessary harm, why wouldn’t we?”
The public is invited to walk or run in support of Farm Sanctuary along New York’s Hudson River Greenway. Participants in the Plant Powered Run join the ranks of likeminded individuals like Baur. With more than 6 marathons, 12 triathlons and an Ironman under his belt, Baur sets an example for plant-based athletes everywhere, demonstrating how powerful we all can be when we fuel ourselves with kindness.
After the Plant Powered Run, participants can continue the compassionate celebration all weekend long at Green Festival held at the Javits Center on June 10-11. Baur will also give a keynote presentation at the New York City Green Festival about how individuals can be effective forces of change and compassion wherever they are on their personal journeys.
Even if you can’t make it out in person, you can still be a part of the movement online by joining the Sleep In for Farm Animals as a virtual participant. Plant Powered Run events will also be held in Los Angeles on September 23, 2017 and in San Francisco on November 11, 2017 in partnership with Green Festival. Community Plant Powered Run events will be held throughout the fall in cities across the country.
