Seven Simple Ways to Help Change the Food System in 2025

Today’s food system is dominated by unsustainable and cruel factory farming of animals. The good news is that you have the power to help transform our food system for the better. As we look to a new year, now is the perfect time to start!

For too long, animal agriculture has gone largely unchecked, enabling the suffering of animals, exploitation of workers, and acceleration of the climate crisis.

Farm Sanctuary is working to address these harms through groundbreaking advocacy efforts, including our recently published Food System Shift Roadmap—a policy blueprint for a just and sustainable plant-based food system. Please join us in helping build the good for animals, people, and the planet by taking action today!

Below are seven simple ways to make a difference.

1. Support the PLANT Act

The Peas, Legumes, and Nuts Today (PLANT) Act is sensible legislation that would ensure that farmers and plant-based food producers are eligible for USDA financial assistance. Fill out our quick form to ask your Representative in Congress to support this bill today.

2. Oppose EATS Act Language in the Farm Bill

The EATS Act is dangerous legislation that could roll back state laws protecting animals and people from the harms of factory farming. Ask your U.S. Representative to respect the will of voters and court rulings by rejecting the inclusion of EATS Act language in the House Farm Bill!

3. Demand Protections for Farmed Birds

Over nine billion chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, and other “poultry” are killed for food each year, yet birds are excluded from all federal animal welfare protections. Ask the USDA to include birds in the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act and the Twenty-Eight Hour Law.

4. Share the Food System Shift Roadmap

Developed by Farm Sanctuary and the Center for Biological Diversity, the Food System Shift Roadmap offers practical policy strategies to improve our food system for animals, people, and the planet. Share the full version or one-page guide with friends and policymakers.

5. Subscribe to Our Emails for Local Advocacy Opportunities

Farm Sanctuary wants to deliver more ways to make a difference directly to your inbox. Be sure to include your zip code so we can send you advocacy efforts involving your community and state. After you take action, maximize your impact by forwarding our alert to local family and friends!

6. Get Active in Your Community

Grassroots advocacy works! Get involved in your area by finding and joining organizing committees, activist groups, and coalitions that are pioneering plant-based food access and animal protection advocacy. Connect with fellow advocates by volunteering with local organizations that help farmed animals or promote food system reform.

7. Eat Plant-Based

Whenever you choose a plant-based meal, you advocate for a kinder food system for animals, people, and the planet. Take your advocacy further by hosting a plant-based potluck in your community. Request vegan options at work, school, and local events. You can even help make plant-based options more accessible and affordable by urging nearby coffee shops to remove the added tax on plant-based milks (like Starbucks recently did!).
