One winter day, a Red Bluff, California couple came home to a 20-pound pink surprise: a lone piglet was grazing contentedly in their yard.

Lucas started life in 2006 at the petting zoo of a summer day camp in Los Angeles, but even though this sweet pig got lots of attention from adoring kids, he was suffering from severe neglect.

Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary has performed hundreds of rescues. During the summer of 2008, we faced one of our most daunting.

One evening in late May of 2006, six piglets, ranging in age from two months to four months, stepped out of a transport van and into a cozy pen in our Northern California Shelter’s hospital building.

One hundred and sixty-seven pigs were the winners in a dramatic showdown between the animal rights movement and the pork industry just outside of Washington, D.C..

Your support helped us come to the aid of over 100 pigs who were left in freezing weather without shelter or food at a farm in Olean, NY.

In 1975, Professor Peter Singer published his seminal book, "Animal Liberation." This critical work illuminated the oppression humans impose on other animals and helped spur the modern animal rights movement. This year, after a complete revision the updated book will be re-released as “Animal Liberation Now'' and published in the US on May 23.
